Are you fortunate enough to have a pond, with many fish in it, on your property? If you do not have a plentiful supply of fish in your pond, you really should consider stocking it, by buying fingerling fish from Pennsylvania. It is important to keep a good balance of different varieties of fish in the pond. If you live near a fish hatchery or fish store in Pennsylvania, going there in person would be a good idea, so that you could see exactly what you are buying.

However, shopping via the internet is also an excellent option. It is very convenient, and takes so much less time. There is a vast amount of information about buying fingerling fish available on line. You will be able to locate companies that have the type of fingerlings you are interested in purchasing. They can be cold pack packaged, to insure that they will arrive alive, if you should decide to have them shipped, instead of picking them up yourself. If you don’t live near the company you decide to buy from, it will probably be less expensive to have them shipped, instead of paying for a tank of gasoline to pick them up yourself.

After you have stocked your pond with these fingerlings, and they grow larger, your fishing experiences will be more rewarding and enjoyable. With today’s economy in mind, the added pleasure of eating those freshly caught fish, and stocking your freezer with them, will be a cost saving measure.

There are two successful ways to catch fish in Pennsylvania, with bait or a lure. Although there is a 3rd way, not all fish listen to your commands well enough to just jump out of the water and into the boat or net. For the casual fisher and even the experienced, it can be downright overwhelming to sift through all the lures and bait on the market and to learn the whens, wheres and hows of the appropriate conditions and situations of use.

The job of a lure is to attract the fish, to appeal to its hunger to dine. Each lure is created to act differently in the water, to look and act like the real deal under the water. Crankbait lures are a hard lure with a lip designed in the shape of a bait fish, typically allowing it dive underneath the water. Crankbait lures have at least 2 sets of hooks, known as treble hooks. Some are designed to dive deep and others to stay in the shallows. There are also lip-less Crankbait lures that work well in rocky or weedy conditions.

If your looking for a fishing experience with more action then a Topwater lure might be what your looking for. Designed to be very light to remain on top of the waters surface, these lures feature very lifelike characteristics that are irresistible to fish. Great for novice or experienced fisherman. Spinnerbait or Buzzbait lures work differently, they have spinner blade attachments that attract fish readily to the attached baitfish decoy as it is reeled in.

Live bait can be just as tempting to fish as lures. Worms, grubs, leaches, crayfish and minnows are very attractive if hooked correctly. You want them to maintain their natural look, avoid containing your bait in non-vented containers. Proper air circulation is key. The idea of live bait is that it is presented to the fish alive. These choices work well in almost any situation and if all else fails, do as Granddad did and throw some dough balls on your hook and see what happens.

Whatever the situation, play around with the different lures and different live bait combination’s. Experience is 90% the game when it comes to understanding what will work for your favorite fishing hole, be it a river, lake or pond. This was only a quick overview of a few options available, there are hundreds more to choose from.

Catfish are bottom feeders so they will eat almost anything. I find that fish heads work great if used during the late night hours. During the day I use normal lures that move fast in the water. The main thing to consider when picking bait is the smell. Catfish live by their sense of smell.

Pennsylvania has three main types of catfish Flatheads, bullheads, and channel cats so do your research on all three before heading out.

Background - Spring Creek is a fertile, 22-mile long limestone stream that drains a 144 square mile watershed in Centre County, Pennsylvania. Spring Creek arises near Boalsburg and flows northeast through State College and Bellefonte to its confluence with Bald Eagle Creek in Milesburg. The watershed is geographically and geologically unique, characterized by a series of long, high ridges and broad limestone valleys. The Spring Creek watershed is home to a number of rare, threatened, or endangered plants and animals and also harbors one of the most productive wild trout fisheries in Pennsylvania. Significant groundwater input provides a stable source of cold, fertile water – ideal conditions for wild trout populations. Total brown trout biomass and the number of quality-size fish make it one of the best Class A wild trout streams in Pennsylvania and it is one of the few streams in the northeastern United States that support this caliber of wild trout fishery. However, the Spring Creek watershed is experiencing some of the most rapid growth and development in Pennsylvania, which has resulted in habitat loss and degradation due to increased stormwater runoff, sedimentation, and reduced riparian protection. In recognition of this important resource, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC), in partnership with many other organizations (see list below), have undertaken several recent projects to protect, conserve, and enhance Spring Creek and its exceptional aquatic resources.
